For us, films are eternal cries, deep noise, they are dreams come true. Films are also a journey that transforms, one that gains accomplices, companions, and then, spectators. The jaguar immerses itself among them, recognizes them and smells them, giving them a place.
Today, we don’t just think about making films seen, that was our teenage dream; our curation is, in essence, the gathering of a cinema full of collective strength, that doesn’t give up, that is evidence of being and doing. Female directors, male directors, female producers, and male producers who want to build a better place for their films, all of them have at the Jaguar a nucleus ready to nourish, they have the space to make their films grow and for their presence to become uncontrollable and ever stronger.
Our curation is the pulsating breath of those unsuspected and immense works that must be discovered, that challenge us in our daily exercise of understanding and accompaniment, titles that arise from a love for an art that challenges us and love as an important concept in all aspects of our work. Cinema is a common force, and we want to take it to the place where magic happens... A screen, whichever is appropriate and within reach. To encounter the gaze of a captive viewer.
Los Nadie, Aislados, and Las Bromelias filled some parks in different Colombian towns, these films were pedaled and watched by the first audiences of our initiative during Efecto Pedal. We realized that we had a long way to go when our audience reacted enthusiastically to films like El pacto de Adriana and Cocote. On the other hand, in partnership with Retina Latina, DOC
achieved over 27 thousand views of different films that were brought to the recognized platform. There, the decentralized perspectives of Colombia took place, the proposals of creators who are not only facing the economic difficulties of making their works, but also the various social and political tensions the country is going through.
In 2019, DOC:CO was part of larger and more significant projects, with the support of the Directorate of Cinematography of the Ministry of Culture, the Film Development Fund, and the Cartagena International Film Festival. DOC
designed and developed CIRCULA Laboratorio de Exhibición Alterna, an initiative to think, study, and reflect on the role of spaces for cinematic dissemination other than commercial theaters. The fundamental success of this project was the in-depth characterization of these actors in the industry.
"In 2020, DOC:CO focused its efforts on extremely important premieres: La Fortaleza, a film that brought football and fan clubs to the stage. Sumercé marked a milestone by being the first film released during the pandemic. We premiered Fait Vivir by director Óscar Ruíz Navia. La Paz was released in theaters and on digital platforms. Lázaro premiered online. And Dopamina hit the theaters. That tough and challenging year, which even still feels recent, confirmed to us that cinema can have life beyond the theaters, and it doubled our confidence in our search and in the purpose of our agency (DOC:CO). We survived a virus that separated us from our daily lives, supported by the power of the films we represent and the strength of all those dreams gathered around cinema
We established two important partnerships, one with the platform Mowies and another with Cinema Paraíso On Demand. In addition, we maintained a constant presence with our films in the virtual room of the Cinemateca de Bogotá. We created an ongoing experience that transcended cinema through online promotional events, dialogues, and meetings with filmmakers. We discovered that online viewing platforms introduced us to new audiences full of daring searches, and we accepted the challenge.
2020 was also the year when DOC:CO Labs was born, a training space that aims to become the epicenter of creation and reflection for those who are searching for their voice everywhere. And finally, we closed a complex and challenging year with the workshop Cine que Transforma for apprentices from all SENA regional offices across the country. There, different perspectives came together, and the concerns of these students engaged in dialogue with experts from various areas of audiovisual creation. We are proud to mention that during this workshop, XX brave, profound, and urgent documentary shorts were produced, filled with urgency for our country.
