Perfume de Gardenias is the first film by the renowned Afro-Puerto Rican singer, multidisciplinary artist, and filmmaker Macha Colón.
A dark comedy that captures the idiosyncrasy and spirit of a nation skilled in creating innovative strategies to laugh in the face of adversity, the film tells the story of Isabel, an elderly woman living in a middle-class neighborhood in Puerto Rico, who has just become a widow after having cared for her husband until his last breath.
In line with Colón's collaborative artistic spirit, Perfume de Gardenias is also a work that brings together her creative community, featuring many intergenerational figures from Puerto Rico's local artistic and cultural circles who appear in the film. As part of a broader body of work that includes productions in music, performing arts, and political activism, Perfume de Gardenias brings to the big screen the bold, joyful, and radically “queer” style that defines Macha Colón’s artistic production.
