He was a history professor at the National University of Colombia and is currently pursuing a PhD in social anthropology and ethnology at the École des Hautes Études en Sciences Sociales in Paris (EHESS), where this work is part of his doctoral thesis on the Chapare coca grower movement. Additionally, Ruiz has worked on several television projects. He founded the production company Medio de Contención Producciones. Since 2011, he has combined his work in filmmaking and production with the development of transmedia and educational projects, specifically in the creation and development of Cinescuela. The films produced by this production company have been part of the official selection at renowned international and national film festivals and have been broadcast on various television networks in Colombia, Latin America, and Europe. He is currently in the preproduction phase of Tantas almas, his first feature film through his third international coproduction.
